Artist statement

My work seeks to be a Mandala-like vehicle, for quiet contemplative pause, within the flow of daily life. I hope my work communicates, inspires and is thought provoking.

The function of my art practice over fifty years, has been to chart life’s journey – emotional, sensory, intellectual and spiritual. These paintings incorporate a range of visual metaphor, reflecting sensory experience, questioning and enquiry. An attitude of ‘I’m still learning’ sums this up. Relating to this, I am investigating and exploring Humanistic Buddhism, as a philosophy, informed by science, inspired by art, and motivated by compassion. In this regard, I would like to dedicate my new work to all those who think for themselves and act for others, summed up by: ‘We have more in common than that which divides us’. To try to live by the values of kindness, community and respect for others. On a formal level, the work explores: associative abstraction, variations in the use of geometry, symmetry and colour harmony, and use of expressive brushwork. One hopes that they will evoke some stirrings within the mind of the beholder, linked to the theme, and individual titles, which are chosen to be subtly communicative.
